Description

Numbers 1 and 2 Heath End Cottages are two cottages dating back to the 16th or early 17th century, with alterations and an addition made in the early 19th century. The construction is timber-frame with brick infill, standing on a stone plinth, with some brick rebuilding and part timber-frame with plastered infill. The roof is tiled, and there are brick stacks.

The cottages form a long range with two gabled wings facing the front, and one to the rear. The wing on the left has close-studded timber framing with plastered infill to a jettied first floor, featuring an ovolo-moulded bressumer over brick underbuilding. The left end also has close-studded framing to the first floor. A brick gabled wing was added in the 19th century on the right. Some timber-frame detailing is visible in a 20th-century sun room at the right end. A plank door is located on the return of the 19th-century wing.

Each wing has a window on each floor, with two-light casements; some have iron opening casements. There is a small first-floor window between the wings positioned over a 20th-century infill. A lateral stack is located on the return of the 19th-century wing, and a stack is within the roof slope at the left end. The right return has small windows on either side of an end stack; an exposed truss is visible in the gable.

The left return displays a wall post in the left angle and some framing to the gable with enriched bargeboards. A segmental-headed window with a brick label mould sits on the ground floor, with a three-light casement featuring decorative glazing with elongated octagons. Above this, on the first floor, is a two-light wood-mullioned window with a bracketed canopy.

The rear elevation shows some timber framing and a blocked first-floor window to the right of the long wing, along with a cross-axial stack. One end has a tie beam and part of a wall post, with later brickwork to the gable. The right return to a lane has a former wall plate over a segmental-headed entrance with a plank door and a segmental-headed window similar to that on the ground floor of the left return. A re-entrant porch has a plank door. To the left of the wing is a porch and some exposed timber framing, and varied casements.

The interior was not inspected.
