Description

Saddlers is a house dating from around 1840, built for Robert Needham Philips. It is constructed of brick with ashlar dressings, some blue brick diapering, and a fishscale tile roof. The roof has a brick stack running across the centre and end stacks with caps. The building is arranged with a main block and a cross-wing to the left, accompanied by a wing to the rear.

The exterior features wide eaves and enriched bargeboards with finials, and terracotta cresting to the roof. The lean-to porch to the right of the cross-wing has a four-centred ashlar head with a label mould above a battened inner door. The ground floor has three-light, double-chamfered mullioned windows with label moulds. The first floor has a canted oriel window to the cross-wing, with a moulded tapering apron and a hipped roof with a finial, and a two-light window in a gabled half-dormer to the right, which features a trefoil above. The windows contain rippled glass, but are otherwise lacking in decorative details. Gabled roofs are present throughout.

The left return displays a projecting window with a hipped roof over two-plus-two transomed lights, and a half-dormer above, matching the front elevation. The rear wing has a catslide roof over a porch to the return. This porch has a brick plinth and an open timber-frame with twisted balusters, with a later 20th-century timber infill and outer door on the right-hand side. There is an end stack and some plain casements. The right return has diapering to a projecting stack and a half-dormer to the rear wing on the right.

The interior of the house was not inspected at the time of listing. For information regarding an outbuilding to the rear, see the listing under Church Road.
