Description

Park View is a house that dates back to the 16th century, with alterations and additions made in the 18th and 19th centuries. It features a timber frame with brick infill, and the front is clad in brick and roughcast. The roof is covered with old tiles and has brick stacks at the cross-axial and rear sections. The building has a three-unit plan, with a doubled gabled unit recessed to the right.

The house has two storeys plus attics. At the top, there is a deep timber cornice with modillions. The right end has two sharp gables with deep verges and plain bargeboards. The entrance, located to the left of the recessed unit, features a moulded timber architrave surrounding a half-glazed door with small-paned lights and 4-centred heads. Most of the windows have sills; the ground floor includes two canted bay windows with small-paned glazing and iron opening casements, while the first floor has similar windows, two 5-light casements, and one 2-light casement. The gabled roofs are complemented by two gabled dormers with bargeboards and 2-light casements.

The recessed unit has two windows on each floor, featuring small-paned cross-casements with 4-centred heads. The right return also displays two sharp gables. The left return showcases exposed three-panel-high square framing and bargeboards, along with a projecting brick rear wing. There is a 19th-century brick two-storey re-entrant unit that has a top plat band and a crenellated parapet. Each face of this unit features an ogee arch and a blind ogee-headed window with an ashlar sill, while the projecting wing has a 2-light window with 4-centred heads.

The rear of the house includes 19th-century additions, featuring two gabled wings at the center and a larger wing to the right. The left end has a lean-to outshut beneath two sharp gables. A cast-iron verandah that was originally at the front has been removed since 1972.

Historically, Park View is believed to have been the birthplace of Richard Shakespeare, who was William Shakespeare's grandfather.
