Description

Swan House, dating from the 16th to 17th century, has been enlarged and extensively altered in the mid-20th century. It is constructed of red sandstone random rubble with a thatched roof and features a brick stack on the left gable end and to the right of the cross passage. The original plan was likely a two-cell layout with a cross passage, and two gabled wings have been added at the rear. The house is one and a half storeys tall and has four bays. It includes three late 17th to early 18th century three-light mullioned and transomed wooden leaded windows, along with a small two-light casement window below the eaves in the second bay on the left. The ground floor has mid-20th century windows, with one on the left and two on the right of a recessed entrance that features a small stairlight in the end bay on the left. The recessed porch has a wooden lintel supported by two steel columns, leading to an entrance through a plank door. Attached to the right is a red sandstone random rubble mounting block, which projects from the chimney breast, and there is an early 19th century leaded iron casement window in the rear wing. The interior has been extensively altered in the mid-20th century, incorporating carved woodwork and an additional staircase to create two separate dwelling units. Swan House is an important feature in the townscape at the junction of High Street, Vellow Road, and Brook Street.
