Description

The Old Vicarage is a vicarage that has been converted into a private dwelling. It dates from the mid to late 15th century, with alterations made in the late 16th to early 17th century, and it was enlarged around 1820. The building was restored in the late 20th century. It features a rendered exterior over rubble, with some cob in the medieval wing, and has an asbestos slate roof that is hipped to the right of the north wing. The structure is arranged in an L-shape, with a medieval open hall house running east-west and a two-storey lower end that has been ceiled to create three cells and a cross passage. There is a small wedge-shaped room at the west end with a newel stair, and a two-cell addition at the northwest end, which has been modified over time.

The building has two storeys and is composed of two sets of two bays. The medieval wing has leaded 20th-century casements, and the entrance is located at the centre left, featuring a chamfered arched stone doorway with a 20th-century medieval-style door. The north wing includes 16-pane sash windows on the first floor and 20-pane sash windows below, flanking a Gothick arched doorway with a panelled door. There is also a single-storey hipped addition on the south side.

Although the interior was not viewed, it is reported to contain evidence of the original open hall house, with a solar over the service end to the east. There are remains of two stud and panel partitions, with the eastern partition featuring two 4-centred arched openings. The building has four long tenon jointed cruck trusses, with remnants of two tiers of curved wind braces and two out of three tiers of chamfered purlins with run-out stops. Renovations have temporarily revealed splayed jambs to windows that are now blocked. The north wing includes a king post roof and six-panel doors decorated with Greek fret designs.
