Description

This description covers a group of three chest tombs located in the churchyard, about 6 meters east of the chancel of the Church of St Leonard. The northern tomb dates from the early 19th century and is made of Ham stone. It features a damaged ledger top, a moulded cornice, fluted end pilasters, and raised and fielded panels inscribed to Robert Willie of Whatley, who died in 1820. The nearby Whatley Farmhouse also has an inscription mentioning Rob. Willie from 1814. The two southern tombs are from the 17th century, also constructed of Ham stone, and have flat tops with cyma recta moulded cornices. The inscriptions on these tombs are mostly illegible, but the name Willie can be discerned on the north face of the southern tomb.
