3/161 Swadel Chest Tomb, 8 metres South of the South door of the chancel, Church of Saint Peter

Chest Tomb. 1617. Ham stone. Rectangular plan. The base sunken; 2 panels each flank, 1 each end, with corner and centre fluted pilasters; very thick hipped top slab with very small dentils in core moulding. Inscription on North face extends over 2 panels and reads "Here resteth-the bodie/of John Swa-del the Youn/ger who de-cesed the 29/of March - Anno Dimi/16-17", all in capitals with no spaces between words. On the South side in the same script is the inscription "John Swa-del the elder/who decea-sed the 24/ of August - Anno Dimi/15-93". The end inscriptions are badly worn.
