Description

The Swadel Chest Tomb, located 8 metres south of the south door of the chancel at the Church of Saint Peter, dates from 1617 and is made of Ham stone. It has a rectangular plan with a sunken base. Each side features two panels, while each end has one panel, all adorned with corner and centre fluted pilasters. The tomb is topped with a very thick hipped slab that has small dentils in the core moulding.

On the north face, an inscription spans two panels and reads, "Here resteth-the bodie/of John Swa-del the Youn/ger who de-cesed the 29/of March - Anno Dimi/16-17," presented in capitals with no spaces between words. The south side bears a similar inscription that states, "John Swa-del the elder/who decea-sed the 24/of August - Anno Dimi/15-93." The inscriptions on the ends are significantly worn.
