Description

Lower Farm House is a farmhouse dating to the 17th century with later additions. It is built of local lias stone, squared and coursed, with dressings of Ham stone. The roof is slate, with coped gables, except for a West extension which has a hipped roof of plain clay tiles. Brick chimney stacks are present at the ends and between the bays. The house is two storeys with an attic, and originally comprised five bays, though bays 1 and 2 were reconstructed in the 19th century. Bays 4 and 5 are gabled, with bay 5 slightly projecting. The front entrance door, glazed in the upper part, is located in bay 2, and is protected by a wirework porch with a metal bell-hip hood. Bays 1 and 2 feature casement windows with horizontal bars in plain surrounds. The ground floor windows in bays 1 and 2 are set within bold, voussoired segmental arches. Bays 3, 4 and 5 originally featured hollow-chamfered mullioned windows with labels; all are four-light except for the upper window in bay 3, which is three-light. A small square window with a hood is set within the attic gable of bay 5.
