Description
The Cross Base and War Memorial is a churchyard cross dating from the 14th century, topped by a war memorial from the early 20th century. It is made of Ham stone for the base and pre-cast concrete for the upper part.
The medieval cross features a base with two octagonal steps, supporting a square socket stone that has moulded and chamfered corners. On top of this socket stone is the early 20th-century shaft, which has inscriptions on both its east and west faces. The east face reads: "IN MEMORY OF / (TWO NAMES)/ PARISHIONERS OF PODYMORE/ KILLED IN THE GREAT WAR/ APRIL 11 AND MAY 3/ RESPECTIVELY 1917/ 'PLEASANT IN THEIR LIVES./ IN THEIR DEATH NOT DIVIDED.' 2 Samuel 1.23 / (NAME)." The west face commemorates "PARISHIONERS/ OF/ PODYMORE/ BURIED IN/ THE CHURCH YARD." The shaft culminates in a cross with rectangular sections, and each face of the cross features the inscription 'IHS' within a circular panel.
