Description

The Church of All Saints is a building of probable 13th-century origins, with some 15th-century work, but significantly restored in 1875. It is constructed of roughly squared and coursed ham stone with ashlar dressings, and has plain clay tiles with bands of fish-scale tiles between coped gables, along with a stone slab roof to the North porch.

The building has a two-cell plan, comprising a single-bay chancel and a four-bay nave, and includes a West tower and a North porch. The chancel features an indistinct plinth and angled corner buttresses with offsets. It has a pointed arched three-light East window with 15th-century tracery under an arched label with head stops, and a thin lancet window in the North wall alongside a simple arched doorway probably dating to the 16th century. A C19 plate tracery window is present in the South wall. The nave has almost full-height buttresses in each bay, a simple plinth, and an eaves course. It possesses C15 style pointed arched traceried windows in deep reveals, all seemingly restorations from the 19th century.

The North porch, likely built around 1330, was restored and features a ribbed vault, a stone slab roof, molded pointed arched doorways, and a plain rectangular niche over the inner door. The tower, probably late 15th century, is divided into four stages marked by string courses with buttresses for the first three stages. It has a plain arched small West doorway under a square label; above is a three-light traceried window cutting into the second stage. A partly blocked statue niche is on the North side with a missing pointed canopy, while a better example is found on the South side. A single cusped lancet window is found on the South face, set high under a square label. A sculptured panel with three figures is positioned above, also under a square label, and a canopied statue niche and another carved panel with three figures are present on the West face at the third stage. The fourth stage has a pointed arched two-light traceried window with pierced stone baffle panels around it. Gargoyles are set on the string course at corners and centres, topped by a battlemented parapet. Corner pinnacles, added in the 20th century, are present but are intended to resemble the originals, which are stored in the churchyard. A square-plan stair turret is located at the North East corner, changing to an octagonal plan at stage two, and is crowned with a weathervane and cock.

Inside, of note is an early 17th-century wood pulpit on a 19th-century base, 17th-century chairs in the sanctuary, and a 15th-century octagonal font with quatrefoil panels. A 15th-century panelled tower arch, with an 18th-century balcony front to the former musicians gallery, also stands. A 15th-century door and doorway lead to the tower stairs. A 19th-century photograph located within the church demonstrates the significant alterations to the North side's fenestration in 1875; the porch and tower remained largely unchanged.
