Description

The waterwheel, located 25 metres north of Whitcombe Farmhouse, dates from the 19th century. It features a cast iron construction with a rubble stone surrounding wall. The wheel has an overshot design and measures 7.4 metres in diameter, with a galvanised tank above it supported by a cast iron column. While the wheel is mostly intact, some buckets are missing. It is believed to have been made by a firm from Westbury, Wiltshire, and was last used in 1965. The feed stream has since become silted up. The waterwheel was used to drive machinery in the barn immediately to the north, although that machinery has been removed and significantly altered, making it of little interest. It is presumed that the waterwheel was installed by the Portman Estate, the former owners of the property.
