Description
Corton Denham House, originally a rectory and now a private house, dates from around 1800 with later modifications. The building is primarily constructed from local stone rubble with ashlar dressings, while the west facade is entirely ashlar. It features a plain clay tiled roof set between stepped coped gables and has brick chimney stacks. The house has a solid 'U'-plan design, is two storeys tall with attics, and the west elevation consists of five bays with an additional single bay extension. Architectural details include a plinth, band course, cornice, and a low plain parapet adorned with pineapple finials at the corners. The windows are 16-pane sashes on the upper level and 24-pane sashes below, all set in architraved surrounds. The central entrance features a part-glazed door within a pitched roof open porch supported by Doric pilasters and topped with a pediment. This porch is flanked by an open Doric-style pergola with a continued entablature and urn corner finials, all made of stone. The north extension bay matches this design. There are three dormer windows with hipped roofs behind the parapet, while the other elevations are simpler in style.
Attached to the rear on the east side is the stable block, which possibly dates from the late 18th century. It has a half hipped plain clay tile roof and features a 12-pane sash window across four bays, stable doors with flat voussoired heads, and a lean-to on the south gable. A late 20th-century sundial plaque is also present. The interior has not been seen.
