Description

The Dairies, which includes Western House and a coach-house, is a building from the early 19th century located in Henderskelfe, Castle Howard. It is constructed from limestone ashlar and Westmorland slate. The house is situated on the right, while the coach-house is on the left, both under a single roof.

The coach-house features six bays and is two storeys high, open to the roof. It has round-arched slatted openings set in a blind arcade with an impost band. There is a boarded door with a fanlight in the third bay and a two-light fixed window between the fifth and sixth bays. The roof is hipped to the left and includes a pair of lanterns at the ridge.

The house consists of two bays and is also two storeys tall. It has a six-panel door beneath a fanlight in a rusticated round-arched doorcase, flanked by 16-pane sash windows. On the first floor, there are unequal nine-pane sash windows. Flat stone arches are present throughout, and the eaves overhang. The roof is hipped to the right, featuring a corniced ridge and end stacks.

Inside, the coach-house has ventilation flues leading to the lanterns, indicating it may have been used for corn storage in the past.
