Description
The Old Black Swan is a public house located on the east side of Bedale Market Place, dating from the mid-18th century. It is constructed of red brick in Flemish bond and features a stone slate roof. The building stands three storeys high and has four bays. The second bay contains a six-panel door, which is accompanied by a 20th-century porch supported by two columns, with a frieze and cornice. This door is flanked by two canted bay windows, each featuring a stone sill, a plinth, 16-pane sash windows, and 4-pane sashes on the sides, along with a frieze and cornice. The right-hand bay has another six-panel door set in a flush wood architrave with a flat brick arch above it. On the first floor, there are 16-pane sash windows, while the second floor has 8-pane sash windows, all with stone sills and flat brick arches. The building also features an eaves band and end stacks.
