Description
Toby's Cottage is a house located on Slingsby Railway Street, dating from the early 19th century, with possible origins in the 17th century. The building is constructed of limestone rubble with remnants of a timber frame and features a pantile roof. It has a central entrance and stands two storeys tall, with three windows on the first floor. There is evidence that the eaves have been raised. The front door is boarded and is flanked by two-light Yorkshire sash windows. The first floor also has two-light Yorkshire sash windows. The eaves are sprocketed, and there is a stack at the left end of the building.
Inside, some timber framing is visible, including a massive chamfered tie-beam to the right of the front door, where a spine beam is tenoned into it, supporting pit-sawn floor joists that are of very slight scantling. There is a massive bressumer in the former kitchen, and the tops of the posts can be seen at the first-floor level.
