Description

Fern Cottage is a house dating from the mid-18th century, with later alterations. It is constructed of limestone rubble, brought to course, and has a pantile roof. Originally designed with a three-cell lobby-entry plan, the layout has subsequently been altered. The house is two storeys high and has five bays. A late 20th-century board door is situated in the third bay. Most of the windows are sixteen-pane sashes, with narrower casements in the first bay and a blocked opening above the door. The ground floor windows have flat stone arches. The roof sweeps up to gable copings, with shaped kneelers, and end and ridge stacks. Internally, two principal roof trusses are visible. The principals are halved and pegged at the apex, with trenched purlins and collars.
