Description
This sundial shaft, dated 1672, is located approximately 2 metres east of the south porch of the Church of St Thomas a Becket in Hampsthwaite. It is made of gritstone and stands about 1 metre high. The base is square in shape, with deeply chamfered corners that end in pyramidal stops at both the top and bottom. The chamfers feature a decorative relief strapwork pattern of diamonds and circles. The upper section displays relief motifs of circles or shields and crosses, along with the date 1672 on the east face.
