Description

Rose Cottage is a house dating from the mid to late 17th century, with remnants of earlier timberwork and 19th-century alterations. It is constructed of coursed gritstone rubble and has a roof covered with small slates. The building is low, two stories high, and has a three-bay lobby-entrance plan, facing south away from the road.

The entrance features a four-panel door located to the left of the third bay, topped with a wooden lintel. The ground floor has three-light recessed mullion windows, although the original mullions have been removed and replaced with paired four-light casements. There is a cement covering over what may be a later window to the right of the door, and two additional inserted windows on the first floor to the left. A ridge stack is positioned above the door and at the left end of the house.

An outbuilding attached to the left end is not considered of special interest. The rear of the cottage features three small 19th-century windows. On the right side, there is a blocked two-light mullion window to the right of a small square central window, along with an inserted first-floor window that has a concrete sill and lintel. Although the interior was not inspected during the resurvey, it has been reported to contain a smoke-blackened common rafter roof that was originally thatched, a characteristic feature in the Vale of York but unusual for this area.
