Description

This is an early 18th-century building on Kirkgate in Ripon, altered in subsequent periods. It is constructed of brown brick with a slate roof. The building is three storeys high and features a brick eaves cornice with modillions. A moulded band runs around the building, rendered over the brick. It has four bays, one of which projects slightly. The windows are segment-headed sashes, believed to be from the 19th century. A first-floor wooden oriel window is canted and features angle pilasters, a moulded cornice, and fretwork valance. A mid-19th century shopfront is present, with scrolled consoles supporting panelled sections leading to a moulded cornice. The glazing bars have tiny capitals and moulded ornament in the spandrels. The mid-19th century front door has six fielded panels and a blocked semi-circular fanlight with glazing bars. The door surround includes panelled pilasters and scrolled consoles to the moulded cornice, mirroring the window surrounds.

Inside, a contemporary staircase features a moulded handrail, a moulded closed string, and slender balusters. The ground floor retains moulded plaster cornices on the early 18th-century joists, with additional mid-19th century plaster ornament on the soffits of the joists.
