Description
Hornblower Restaurant is a building dating from 1836, originally serving as a cell-block for the former Borough Police Station at No 5 Kirkgate. It is constructed of brown brick, with the ground floor white-washed. The building has two storeys and features brackets supporting the gutter. On the first floor, there are two barred windows, and a stone plaque displays a defaced shield of arms.
The cell-block ceased operation when the Borough Police Force was replaced by the West Riding Force in 1887. The West Riding Force then took over the former House of Correction, which had been disused since 1878.
