Description
Nos 5A, 5, and 6 Kirkgate are 18th-century buildings, depicted on the right side of J. M. W. Turner's drawing of Kirkgate from 1797, which is held at the British Museum. They are constructed of red brick and feature a hipped modern pantile roof. The buildings rise three storeys and have a wood modillioned eaves cornice. There are six bays with sash windows. Nos 5 and 6 include mid-19th-century shopfronts that have fluted pilasters supporting moulded consoles topped with ornamental finials. No 5A served as the Borough Police Station until the West Riding Force was established in 1887.
