Description
This is a milepost located adjacent to the south-east corner of Went Bridge, dating from 1832 to 1833. It is made of magnesian limestone and features a short, rectangular-sectioned pillar with a rounded head. The front face of the milepost has an inscription that reads:
DONCASTER / 8½ MILES / ASKERN 1½ / SELBY 11½ / YORK 26.
This milepost is part of a series that are likely original to the Doncaster-Selby road, which was turnpiked following an act on 6th June 1832. A copy of the Doncaster-Selby turnpike statute can be found in the Doncaster Library Service Archives on King Edwards Road, Balby.
