Description

This milestone, dating from 1832, was erected for the Doncaster and Selby Turnpike. It is made of magnesian limestone and has a rectangular shape with a gabled top. On the side facing the road, it is inscribed with the distances: “DONCASTER / 14 MILES / ASKERN 7 / SELBY 5 / YORK 20.” Despite significant weathering, the inscription remains legible. The rear side of the milestone is blank, and the sides have sunken panels that appear to be intended for metal plates, although there are no signs of fixing holes.
