Description

The Red House is a vicarage, now a house, built in 1854 with later alterations. It was designed by architect William Butterfield for the 7th Viscount Downe and constructed by Charles Ward of Lincoln. The building is made of pinkish-red brick in English bond and features a grey tile roof. It has two storeys with three first-floor windows and a single-storey range at the rear.

The entrance is off-centre, with double plank doors topped by a pointed overlight under a pointed arch. To the right of the entrance, there is a small four-pane sash window, a large tripartite window with a four-pane sash that is a later addition, and a similar smaller window. All ground-floor openings are below header arches and pointed relieving arches. On the first floor to the left, there is a pointed tripartite window with a six-pane sash under a pointed arch set in a high gable. To the right, there is a two-light timber mullion window with two-pane sashes and a tripartite window with a twelve-pane sash in a half-hipped roof dormer. The ridge, rear, and side stacks have cogged bands.

Inside, the house retains several original features. The library includes bookshelves and a fireplace, while the dining room features an oak fireplace, roll-moulded beams, and panelled walls. The dogleg staircase has chamfered plank balusters, and some windows have shutters. The doors are six-panel. The Red House is an early example of a Victorian return to a straightforward and honest style of house building, lacking stylistic imitation. It was conceived as part of a group with St Paul's Church and Hensall Primary School, as well as similar groups in Cowick and Pollington.
