Description
Hensall Primary School and the Schoolmaster's House were built in 1854, with later additions and alterations made in 1893, 1968, and 1970. The architect was William Butterfield, and it was built by Charles Ward of Lincoln, under the patronage of the 7th Viscount Downe. The building features pinkish-red brick, partly rendered, and has a grey slate roof. It is a two-storey structure with two first-floor windows and a single tall storey, alongside a two-bay schoolroom.
The design reflects Aesthetic Functionalism. The main range has a ground floor that is obscured by 20th-century additions, with an entrance leading to a 20th-century porch that includes double, part-glazed doors and a nine-pane window. The first floor features a two-light timber mullion window with four-pane sashes and a tripartite window with a two-pane sash in the center, both set in a long raking dormer. The schoolroom has three six-pane casement windows and two roof dormers. There is an external end stack and a large stepped external stack on the front elevation, along with two rainwater heads bearing the initial "D". The roof is sweeping and has two levels.
Inside, many original features remain, including fireplaces, cupboards with hinges, dado rails, six and eight-panel doors, and a dogleg staircase to the master's house with plain balusters. The building is part of a group that includes St Paul's Church and The Red House, as well as similar groups in Cowick and Pollington.
