Description
This milestone, dating from 1833 to 1834, was erected for the Doncaster and Selby Turnpike Trust. It is made of magnesian limestone and features a rectangular pillar with a gabled head. The front of the milestone has an ashlar surface that is inscribed with the distances to Doncaster (15 miles), Askern (8½ miles), Selby (4½ miles), and York (19 miles), positioned above a chamfered plinth that has horizontal furrowed surfaces. The top edge of the plinth is lower at the front than on the sides. Each side of the milestone includes a sunken rectangular panel, suggesting that it may have been intended to hold a metal plate, although there is no evidence that any plates were ever attached. The rear of the left-hand panel has a raised vertical edge, while the back of the stone is blank and is visible in the sloping bank of the roadside ditch.
