Description
Burton Bridge is an accommodation bridge over the Selby Canal, built between 1775 and 1778 and designed by William Jessop. The bridge is made of dressed sandstone blocks and features a humpbacked, single span with a semicircular, voussoired arch. There is a chamfered plinth on both sides of the arch and an iron rope roller located on the northwest corner of the arch. A projecting string course runs along the bridge, and it has a low, slightly cambered solid parapet made of large ashlared blocks of millstone grit. The parapet curves into round capped piers. The Selby Canal was constructed during the same period, with William Jessop serving as the principal engineer.
