Description
This milepost, located opposite the northern junction with Rosedale Road in Bentley with Arksey, dates from 1832 to 1833 and is made of magnesian limestone. It features a short, rectangular-sectioned pillar topped with a triangular head. The inscription on the front face indicates the distances to various locations: "DONCASTER / 2 1/2 MILES / ASKERN 4 1/2 / SELBY 17 1/2 / YORK 32." This milepost is part of a series that likely originated with the Doncaster-Selby road, which was turnpiked following an act passed on 6th June 1832. A copy of the Doncaster-Selby turnpike statute can be found in the Doncaster Library Service Archives on King Edwards Road, Balby.
