Description

The wall enclosing the yard in front of the Old Village School House dates from the late 17th century or early 18th century. It is constructed of rubble magnesian limestone, featuring ashlar quoins and copings. This L-shaped wall stands approximately 1.5 metres high and encloses the east and south sides of the yard. It adjoins Cooke's Almshouses, which form the north boundary of the yard. The gateway opposite the central entrance to the school has taller piers, with the wall copings rising in a quadrant. A short return of the wall links to the front-left corner of the School House and includes a quoined gateway opening. The domed copings have been partly removed due to vandalism on the southern section of the wall. This structure is included for its group value.
