Description
Arksey Vicarage is a vicarage built between 1834 and 1835, with alterations made later. It was designed by Woodhead and Hurst of Doncaster, with construction by builders R. and C. Lister. The building is made of ashlar magnesian limestone and has a 20th-century tiled roof. It is two storeys high and features a symmetrical facade with three bays, the central bay being narrower, gabled, and set forward. The design is in the Gothic Revival style.
The vicarage has a chamfered plinth and a central part-glazed door that is framed by a chamfered ashlar surround with a triangular head and a hoodmould that has lozenge-shaped stops. Above the door is a blank shield in a panel. The flanking bays contain large three-light mullioned windows with chamfered ashlar surrounds and cavetto-moulded mullions, featuring pointed-arched lights with unequally-hung 10-pane sash windows. On the first floor, there are smaller two-light windows with 8-pane sashes in the same style, with the central window consisting of three lights.
There are altered eaves and gable details, and two corniced, cruciform stacks are positioned at the rear of the ridge. On the left side of the building, there is a French window on the ground floor to the left and a blind window on the right, with two-light first-floor windows matching those at the front. An addition on the right return is not considered of special interest. The vicarage is included for its group value. Plans for the building are dated September 20th, 1833, and are held at the Borthwick Institute in York.
