Description
Went Bridge is a bridge built between 1832 and 1833, made of horizontally-tooled, deeply-coursed magnesian limestone. It features a single span with a segmental arch that curves and springs from vertical abutment walls. The arch is adorned with rusticated voussoirs and a keystone that has a carved head. Above the arch, there is a band that connects to projecting abutment piers and to the end piers of splayed wing walls, topped with domed parapet copings. This bridge is the most elaborate of the remaining structures originally built for the Doncaster-York road, which was turnpiked following an act in 1832. Part of it is located in the parish of Norton in South Yorkshire.
