Description
This is a mile post dating from the mid-18th century, made of cut stone. It is a square post with separate inscriptions on each face, accompanied by a pointing hand. The southeast face is inscribed with "Roade to / Spofforth / 2 Miles," while the southwest face reads "Roade to / Leeds / 9 Miles." The northwest face states "Roade to / Harrogate / 1 Mile," and the northeast face is inscribed "Roade to / Knaresbr / ough / 2 Miles." Notably, the southeast front has an iron hinge spindle inserted, indicating that this stone post may have been used as a gatepost at a later time.
