Description

This is a house, now divided, and a cottage, joined to a half-house and known as Ferndale House, along with associated front railings. The building is constructed of coursed rubble with ashlar dressings, featuring a stone slate roof and wrought-iron railings. The main house is dated 'CJ 1772' on a rainwater head on the right return, indicating construction in the 18th century. It is three storeys high and five bays wide, with rusticated quoins. The central doorway has a moulded, shouldered and eared surround, a pulvinated frieze, a modillioned cornice, and a pediment. The windows have plain ashlar surrounds; on the ground and first floors, the left three bays (Jasmine House) have four-pane sashes, while the right two bays (Ferndale House) feature sashes with glazing bars. Smaller, square four-pane sashes are on the second floor. A cornice features large modillions. Ashlar copings top the walls, and end stacks are present. The cottage to the right has an 18th century gable front, with two storeys and one bay. It has a 20th century central door in a plain stone surround, with a simple wrought-iron porch. A keystone is present in the relieving lintel above the door, and a plain board door is located to the right. A sash window with glazing bars is on the first floor. The cottage has a coping and a Welsh slate roof, along with a ridge stack. Internally, original doors, door linings, shutters, part stairs, and on the top floor of Ferndale House, an original fireplace and some Georgian paintwork remain. The front railings and gates have alternating wavy and straight bars, with urn finials to the standards and are set on ashlar plinths.
