Description

146 to 152 Castle Road are a group of three-storey and basement houses, built around 1840-1850 and faced with stucco. There have been some alterations over the years. The central pair, numbers 148 and 150, project slightly and feature a full-width gable that originally had deep moulded eaves. Number 146 retains deep moulded eaves supported by long shaped wooden brackets. Number 152 has a moulded eaves band. Each of numbers 146 and 152 has two windows, with the second-floor windows positioned between the eaves brackets.

The first-floor windows are tall sashes set within architrave surrounds, topped with pediments, while the ground floor features architrave-framed sashes with panelled aprons. Access to the houses is via a flight of steps with cast iron railings leading up to four-panel doors that have rectangular fanlights within eared architraves. The central pair, numbers 148 and 150, each have two second-floor windows without glazing bars, and a tripartite glazing bar sash window on the first floor, separated by pilasters and framed by an architrave surround with a cornice above.

Between these houses is a blind architrave-framed window with a segmental pediment. On the ground floor, each house has a canted bay, and the basement features pilasters with intact glazing bars. A moulded cornice runs across the centre above the paired pilaster-framed entrances, which have four-panel doors set back and two-pane fanlights. The group has significant architectural value.
