Description

This street lamp post dates from 1899 or later. It is a tall structure of cast iron, with a cylindrical base that incorporates an access door displaying the coat of arms for Harrogate. The base is followed by a series of decorative bands leading to a beaded ring. Above this are a pair of acanthus leaves that clasp the flared lower section of the post. Further bands continue upwards, including a flange and a crown depicting palm leaves, after which the post becomes a plain circular column until it reaches a square block which supports ball-ended ladder supports. The top of the post is bell-ended and carries more embossed decoration. Later, in the late 20th century, the original lanterns were replaced. Modern steel scrollwork supports now hold lanterns based on the early 20th century ‘Rochester’ design.
