Description
23 and 24 King Street, formerly the York Hotel, dates from the mid-18th century with alterations from the late 18th to early 19th century. Originally a single property, it is three storeys high with a basement, featuring a well-preserved red brick front on a stone plinth, stone quoins, and a moulded stone string course at the first floor. The building has a wood frieze and moulded cornices. The front has two bays with recessed sash windows that are four panes wide, topped with rubbed flat arches on the left and right. There is a two-storey segmental bow window with tripartite sashes and intact glazing bars, and a sliding Yorkshire casement window in the basement. The central entrance door has six fielded panels and a large rectangular fanlight with a diamond and triangular pattern. The stone doorcase features an eared architrave, pilaster strips, and carved scroll brackets supporting the cornice hood. At the rear, there is a two-storey roughcast wing that was the former public house front, with pilasters and a cornice on the ground floor, and single and paired sashes on the first floor, also with intact glazing bars. Although divided into two properties, both parts retain fielded panelling. In No 23, there are corner fireplaces and a good staircase with a closed string, turned balusters, a moulded rail, and square newels. The Brewery Stores and Nos 21 to 24 form a group with this building.
