Description
Milestone and mile-post located on Melsonby Road in Aldbrough, dating from the late 18th century to early 19th century, with an addition around 1890. The structure is made of sandstone and cast iron. On the left is an earlier milestone with a triangular shape and a damaged top, featuring a hand pointing to the right. To the right is a later cast-iron mile-post, also triangular, which has a hand pointing right with the inscription "RICHMOND 7 MILES" on the left side, and a hand pointing left with "LUCY CROSS 1 MILE" on the right side. The top of this mile-post reads "RICHMOND HD" (Highways Department), indicating it was erected after the Highways Act of 1888. The lower portions of both stones are set into the grass verge.
