Description
Nos 1 to 3 and 3A Burgate is a building dating from the 18th century or early 19th century. It stands five storeys tall, constructed of red brick with a hipped pantile roof. The Burgate elevation features an attic storey with five lunette windows, above five rectangular windows with stone surrounds, and rectangular shop fronts, one of which has glazing bars. There is a door located at the corner, and the building has a stone moulded eaves cornice, with a band between the first and attic storeys. The rusticated stone quoins add to its architectural detail.
On the Market Place elevation, there are two lunette windows above two windows in stone surrounds, leading to a modern shop front for No 2. No 1 has two lunette windows above two windows in stone surrounds, along with one similar window on the ground floor and a rectangular bay window. A modern door with a rectangular fanlight is also present.
This group of buildings, which includes Nos 1 to 15 and 17 to 21, along with Nos 3A, 6A, 12A, and 12B, forms a cohesive architectural group with Nos 30 to 40, of which Nos 4, 5, 12A to 14, 17, 18, and 37 to 39 are noted for local interest.
