Description
35 Regent Parade is a hotel or lodging house that has been converted into a shop and flats. It was built around 1740 and has undergone alterations and additions in the late 19th century and late 20th century. The building is constructed from dressed rubble stone with ashlar dressings and features a stone slate roof. It has two gable chimney stacks and coped gables with kneelers. The structure is three stories high with prominent flush quoins.
The main northeast front has a 20th-century shop front on the ground floor with a canopy. Above this, there are three tall plain sash windows set in ashlar surrounds with a moulded cornice. The top floor features three smaller plain sash windows in plain ashlar surrounds. The right return of the building is blank and rendered, while the left return has a single sash window on each of the lower floors. The rear facade has single windows on each floor to the right, with the lower windows on the left obscured by a 20th-century two-story extension. The top floor windows all have 20th-century windows in their original ashlar surrounds.
Although the interior was not inspected, the first-floor windows are noted to have clearly visible 18th-century panelled shutters. This house was the childhood home of W P Frith, the famous Victorian painter, from 1826 to 1835 before he moved to London. Additionally, the world-renowned violinist Paganini played a concert here in 1833 and likely stayed overnight.
