Description

This boundary stone, located at the grid reference SD 9517 5236, dates back to 1698 and was originally used to separate the lands of Thomas, Earl of Thanet, and Stephen Tempest of Broughton Hall. It now marks the division between the parishes of Stirton with Thorlby and Broughton. The stone is made of millstone grit rubble and stands approximately 75 cm high. It is part of an original series of 41 stones, numbered 23. The north side is inscribed with a "T" for Thanet, while the south side features "ST" for Stephen Tempest. The number 23 is also inscribed on the top of the stone.
