Description
This boundary stone, dating from 1698, is located at the grid reference SD 9490 5298 and originally marked the division of lands between Thomas, Earl of Thanet, and Stephen Tempest of Broughton Hall. It now separates the parishes of Stirton with Thorlby and Broughton. The stone is made of millstone grit rubble and stands approximately 70 cm high. It is numbered 8 in the original series of 41 boundary stones. The east side is inscribed with a "T" for Thanet, while the west side features "ST" for Stephen Tempest. The number 8 is also inscribed on the top of the stone. This boundary stone has been previously listed under the parish of Broughton but that entry was removed on October 3, 2018.
