Description

This boundary stone, dating from 1698, originally marked the division of lands between Thomas, Earl of Thanet, and Stephen Tempest of Broughton Hall. It now separates the parishes of Stirton with Thorlby and Broughton. Made from millstone grit rubble, the stone stands approximately 67 cm high and is part of an original series of 41 stones. It is inscribed with a "T" for Thanet on the east side and "ST" for Stephen Tempest on the west side. The stone is positioned about four yards within Thanet's land to protect it from water damage.
