Description
This boundary stone, dating from 1698, is located at the grid reference SD 9506 5265 and originally marked the division between the lands of Thomas, Earl of Thanet, and Stephen Tempest of Broughton Hall. It now separates the parishes of Stirton with Thorlby and Broughton. The stone is made of millstone grit rubble and stands approximately 45 centimeters high. It is numbered 16 in the original series of 41 boundary stones. The east side is inscribed with a "T" for Thanet, while the west side features "ST" for Stephen Tempest. The top of the stone bears an inscription that appears to read "13". It is positioned about one yard within Thanet's land to facilitate ditching.
