Description
This boundary stone, dating from 1698, originally marked the division between the lands of Thomas, Earl of Thanet, and Stephen Tempest of Broughton Hall. It now serves as a boundary between the parishes of Stirton with Thorlby and Broughton. Made of millstone grit rubble, the stone stands approximately 30 cm high and is numbered 29 in a series of 41. The north side is inscribed with a "T" for Thanet, while the south side features "ST" for Stephen Tempest. In May 1702, the stone was removed and reset eleven yards within Thanet's property to protect it from erosion by the river. This information is sourced from the Broughton Hall Archives, specifically Box One, bundle 9, which contains boundary rolls from 1698 to 1757.
