Description

Stonegate House is a former house and stables, likely dating from the mid-18th century, with alterations in the 20th century. The stables were built in 1809 and subsequently altered in the late 19th and 20th centuries. The house is constructed of rendered stone with painted stone dressings, and has a stone slate roof.

The house has a central staircase plan and is two storeys high with three bays. The central entrance has a moulded surround and a half-glazed door dating from around 1900. Large canted bay windows, also from around 1900, flank the entrance on both ground floor levels; the roofs of these windows extend over the entrance to create a hood. The upper floor has two three-light flat-faced mullioned windows and a central single-light window, all with 20th-century casements. Chamfered quoins are visible at the former gables, and a ridge stack, originally at a gable, is now at the junction with the former stable.

The former stables, situated to the right of the house, are two storeys high with three bays. A left-hand entrance features a Gibbs surround and a painted datestone inscribed 'W. E./Ls sW' above the lintel, with a plank door. The central waggon entrance has a segmental hood and keystone, with two-leaf plank doors. A right-hand entrance and window from around 1860 feature vermiculated surrounds, round heads, and keystones; these have a plank door and a fixed light respectively. Two keyed pitching eyes to the left also have vermiculated surrounds, now fixed lights. A left-hand two-light recessed flat-faced mullioned window on the upper floor has a 20th-century casement.

The gate piers are constructed of millstone grit with square bases and octagonal shafts, topped with plain band and fluted caps. A curved wall and coping are present to the left-hand gate piers. Original railings are now missing.
