Description
9 and 11 Church Walk is an old grammar school that has been converted into two houses. The school was founded in 1525 and closed in 1888. The current site was granted in 1588 and the building was constructed through public subscription. It was subdivided and remodeled in 1891 by J.F. Curwen. The structure is made of coursed rubble with quoins and features a graduated slate roof that is hipped at the east end. There is a corniced stone chimney at the west end and a large stone cross-ridge mid chimney with seven cylindrical stacks. The building has two storeys and consists of six bays overall.
On the south elevation, No 9 has a full-height gabled wing that includes decorative barge-boards and a crocketed finial, along with a cylindrical stone chimney at the eaves. The entrance to No 9 is located in the west return, while No 11 has a plank door under a canopy supported by pierced wooden brackets, with the left bracket dated 1592 and the right bracket dated 1891. The windows in the 19th century are wooden mullioned and transomed, with diamond-leaded glass, inserted into older, larger openings, some of which have timber lintels. The north elevation features some 18th-century sashes with wide glazing bars that have been inserted into earlier openings. A straight joint indicates that the eastern bay was added later. Inside, a massive stop-chamfered beam remains. The building is part of a group associated with the churchyard.
