Description
The Church of the Holy Trinity is a parish church located in Kendal, established by 1232, as indicated by an indulgence issued for fabric repairs. It features later medieval additions and underwent comprehensive restorations in the 19th century, designed in the Perpendicular style. The earlier masonry is made of coursed, squared rubble, while the later work is constructed from snecked rubble. The church has chamfered plinths and stepped buttresses, with lead roofs that include gargoyles and pinnacles atop castellated parapets. It has a rectangular plan with double aisles, a chancel, and a west tower incorporated internally.
The church includes a west porch and a vestry added in 1934, which is not of particular interest. The eastern chapels, dedicated to the Bellingham, Parr, and Strickland families, house some notable tombs and memorials. Among these is a memorial by Flaxman on the north wall and a memorial to the artist George Romney on the west wall. The Church of the Holy Trinity is recognized as one of the widest medieval parish churches in Britain, measuring 103 feet across. It serves as a focal point of the churchyard group and is a significant feature along the riverside.
