Description
The Museum of Lakeland Life and Industry, originally stables and a carriage entrance to Abbot Hall, was likely built around 1759 by John Carr of York for Colonel George Wilson. It now serves as a museum, having opened in 1971. The building is constructed from limestone blocks with quoins and sits on a plinth. It features impost bands on the projecting central and end bays, a dentilled cornice, and a blocking course on the central bay. The roofs are hipped and covered with graduated slate, with a pyramidal roof and a small lantern on the central bay. The east elevation is symmetrical and consists of seven bays arranged as 1:2:1:2:1, with the taller central bay set forward. The central bay contains a semicircular-headed carriage arch, which has been converted into a glazed museum entrance, with an oval window above it. There are two semicircular-headed windows in the bays on either side, and the bays at each end have two blind semicircular-headed arches separated by pilasters.
