Description

Lonsdale House Hotel is a house that has been converted into a hotel, dating from the late 18th century. It features painted stucco with some painted stone dressings, brick chimney caps, and a slate roof. The building has three storeys above a cellar and consists of six bays. The outer bays are slightly set back, and the right-hand bay includes a yard entrance with a segmental arch. Above the ground floor, there is a storey band and a moulded gutter cornice. The ground floor bays two to five have channelled rustication. The windows have plain reveals and are mainly glazing bar sashes, except for those on the second floor, which are 20th-century centre-pivoting casements with six panes. The doorway, located in the third bay, is accessed by steps that run parallel to the wall and feature iron railings, including a gate at the landing level. The door has six flush panels and a fanlight with Gothick glazing, set within a surround resembling a Venetian window, complete with moulded imposts that create cornices above blind panels on either side and a segmental super-arch. To the left, steps lead down to a 20th-century cellar doorway. The building has gable chimneys, and the rear wall includes a Venetian stair window. Inside, the staircase features an open string, tread brackets, mahogany stick balusters, and a wreathed mahogany handrail.
