Description

Old Daltongate House is a house located in Ulverston, likely built around 1600 and altered and re-faced in the mid-18th century. It features painted roughcast walls with painted stone dressings and a slate roof, forming an L-plan structure. The house has two storeys and three bays. The facade includes a storey band and glazing bar sash windows, all except the central window on the first floor set in tripartite stone surrounds. Above the doorway, which has a plain stone surround, there is a stone hood supported by fluted brackets. The door consists of six flush panels and includes an overlight.

Inside, the entrance hall has a wall of re-used 17th-century panelling on the left and a wall of 18th-century raised and fielded panels on the right. The left-hand front room features an early or mid-18th-century stone fireplace with a keystone, along with a round-arched cupboard adorned with pilasters, a cornice, and doors of raised and fielded panels. The rear wing contains large re-used chamfered main ceiling joists and a shouldered stone fireplace. The mahogany staircase has an open string, turned balusters, and half-balusters. Some first-floor rooms have oak floorboards, and the rear wing at this level has a blocked 2-light oak-mullioned window in its west wall. At the attic level, there is a similar window in the west gable wall, along with some 17th-century type panelling. The principals are made of hardwood, and part of a reed and plaster ceiling is visible.
